The FDA recommends all users of hearing aids to be examined by a physician, preferably one who specializes in the diseases of the ear (otolaryngologist). Many insurance companies that provide hearing aid benefits require a physician's medical clearance before the hearing aid fitting.
It is always in your best interest to be evaluated by a physician prior to the hearing aid fitting, especially if there is a history of ear infections, surgeries and/or a difference in hearing between the two ears.
